Know Your Country’ Tourism Campaign launched at Amedzofe
August 8, 2024In an effort to bring attention to the numerous underappreciated tourist attractions in Ghana, ROIS Travels Limited, a leading travel and tour agency based in Accra, has launched the ‘Know Your Country’ Tourism Campaign. The campaign’s launch event took place in Amedzofe, located in the Ho West District of the Volta Region, and showcased some of the hidden gems of the area.
As part of the campaign, ROIS Travels organized a one-day trip for tourists from Accra to Amedzofe. The visitors were given the opportunity to climb Gemi Mountain, explore the newly introduced Canopy Walkway, and experience the Otey Waterfalls—all situated in Amedzofe, the highest human habitation enclave in Ghana.
The launch event also saw the participation of hundreds of students from Ahamansu Senior High School in the Oti Region and Pentecost University College in Accra, emphasizing the educational aspect of the campaign.
Gemi Mountain, a site rich in history, offers more than just a hiking experience. The mountain is crowned with a metal cross erected by missionaries in 1939 to celebrate their 50th anniversary and serves as a testament to the area’s religious heritage. Additionally, it played a crucial role during the conflicts between the Asantes and the Ewes in the late 19th century. From its summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Volta Lake and surrounding communities, including Kpando, Tafi Atome, and Logba, as well as the Agu Mountain in neighboring Togo.
Amedzofe also boasts the Otey Waterfalls and the region’s only Canopy Walkway, which offers a unique experience compared to other walkways in Ghana. According to local managers, this walkway provides visitors with the sensation of ‘showers of blessings’ as they traverse it.
Hon. Robert Ameh, Assembly Member for the Amedzofe Electoral Area, welcomed the ROIS Travels team and guided the tourists through the attractions. Among the visitors was Onggy Hianata Elolo Rois, the three-year-old son of H.E. Pascal A.B. Rois, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Indonesia in Ghana.
At the launch event, Mrs. Gifty Etse Rois, CEO of ROIS Travels Limited, highlighted Ghana’s rich tapestry of tourist attractions, ranging from historic coastal forts and castles to lush rainforests and wildlife sanctuaries. She lamented that many Ghanaians are unaware of these treasures and expressed hope that the ‘Know Your Country’ campaign would change this.
“Our campaign aims to inspire Ghanaians to explore the wonders of their own country,” Mrs. Rois stated. “By organizing local tours, educational trips, and family excursions, we want to make it easier for everyone to experience Ghana’s cultural heritage and natural beauty.”
ROIS Travels plans to offer a variety of tour packages tailored to different interests and needs, and will partner with schools across the country to organize educational tours that complement academic curricula. Mrs. Rois mentioned several attractions in the Volta Region, such as Mount Afadjato, Wli Waterfalls, Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, Tafi Abuife Kente Village, Fort Prinzeinstein at Keta, and the Crocodile Pond at Ave Dakpa, which will be included in future tours.
H.E. Pascal A. B. Rois, who led the team of tourists, emphasized the value of local tourism and reminisced about the educational benefits of school excursions in the past. He urged the government to revive such initiatives, noting that tourism has the potential to significantly boost Ghana’s economy. He cited Bali in Indonesia, which generates $10.6 billion annually from tourism, as an example for Ghana to emulate.
Hon. Robert Ameh expressed gratitude to ROIS Travels for their initiative and noted that Amedzofe is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination. However, he highlighted the poor road network as a major hindrance to tourism development and renewed appeals to the government to improve the infrastructure.
